Bones to Contemplateby Peggy HuscherSpring of 2022, I met Lucy and we started our daily walk through row after row of headstones. Nice soft grass for her little paws, lots of shade and time to ponder. Never having spent much time in a graveyard before, I was unaware of what people were putting on and around their markers. Times have changed, we no longer put the length of a person's life in years, months and days. We have gone from bare minimum on a headstone to whole family photo albums, including our fur friends. Graves are decorated with statues of dogs and cats. There is even a large headstone in the shape of a cat. Lucy and I found a stone that lists all the names of their pets, with a collection of photos and paw prints covering the back of their plaque. And of course some people want to be buried with their pet. (we didn’t find these stones in “our” cemetery though) What are your thoughts/plans? Do you want to share your headstone with a pet? Will there be urns of ashes in your arms as you are laid to rest? Or does a pet cemetery seem a better choice? |
