The Importance of a Dog's Dietby Peggy HuscherDiet for our pets is thought about more than ever these days! I'd like to share a story about a canine friend of mine which demonstrates how extremely important diet truly is. She is 10 years old, nearing the life span of a Ridgeback. She has a fast-growing soft tissue sarcoma. Though she was sick, she did not act ill at all, as she continued to be an active coutnry dog. The first treatment recommended was to remove her leg, but this wasn't an option for the owners, who watch her play and live life to the fullest outside day to day. Next on the list was a chemo treatment, which did not work. The lumps continued to grow and spread. This dog's owner then put in many hours resarching canine diet. She came up with a special plan specifically for a dog with cancer involving homemade recipes and top-shelf ingredients. It's time-consuming and expensive - but it's showing miraculous results! There will always be dry and canned food available for those that need inexpensive and easy food options for their pets, but we need to recognize there are better options for those in our care. Canned and dry food has undesirable preservatives and no regulation over quality of ingredients. For example, the meat could be diseased or even roadkill. A start to the better health of your dog would be to reduce canned and dry good by several meals a week. Better options, such as freeze-dried foods like Honest Kitchen or Halo, can be very expensive. However, this can mean lower vet bills and a longer life for those we love. More information on this subject can be found in "The Ultimate Pet Health Guide" by Dr. Gary Richter, D.V.M. |
