The Quest to Go Green

by Ezra Huscher

Nowadays, businesses and the modern economy have a bigger impact on our environment than ever before - from transporting materials to consuming energy and resources. Both small and large companies make decisions that affect what profit they make, and also decisions that affect a clean and sustainable future for the next generations. Often, these choices don't coincide neatly with each other.

When Always Home opened at its current location on Holmes Road, we knew we wanted to become the best dog daycare possible. Beyond striving for the happiest dogs and dog-owners with our services, we find many nuisances to being socially responsible as a business. What companies do we purchase dog food from? What vehicle do we make our daily house runs in? What indoor temperature is best for our dogs on a hot summer day? Each of these questions has both an element of cost and an element of environmental impact.

We took our first big dive into establishing a conscious-minded business in the summer of 2017, buying an all-electric Nissan Leaf as the company car. An incredibly efficient and quiet vehicle, the reaction of amusement or skepticism from people will soon give way to normalcy, as more and more EVs make it to the midwest states. We've installed a charger in the garage that can power up the car's batteries from empty to full in 8 hours. With a combustion engine, the vehicle not only consumes that fuel, but additional fuel was needed to transport it from oil fields around the world. Producing this transportation energy more close by not only benefits local economies, but saves fuel and world air quality.

We're excited to report that the second major phase of our company's "green" efforts was completed last month! When approaching from Magnolia Road, one can easily see the new 9 kilowatt solar array installed on the roof by King Solar out of Yoder, KS. It produces 60 kilowatt-hours of power on a sunny day, which is more than enough to power the electric car, the entire indoor daycare, the cameras and security system, and still a good portion of the family house. You can see a feed of our real-time power production by clicking here.

Though these moves have required significant investment, we believe that its the right path for a responsible business in the 21st century. Perhaps the greatest postive impact a citizen can have is carefully choosing what companies they do business with. Thanks to all of our friends and clients for your continued support, and we encourage you to continue the conversation about ways we can make smart decisions for our planet's future.
