Recommendation for "Merle's Door"

by Peggy Huscher

Merle's Door - Lessons from a Free Thinking Dog, by Ted Kerasote, is a story of a tight bond between the author and his dog. The relationship is one of mutual learning and respect. Intertwined in this story is information on canine history and research. I enjoyed Mr Kerasote's writing style and interpretation of what was going on in Merle's head. This book gives plenty to ponder on how we share life with our own dog. Not many of us can have the lifestyle that Ted and Merle had, but are we giving our dogs opportunity to be dogs and individuals? Are we taking away their ability to think and enjoy life to the fullest?

The story begins when they find each other on a rafting trip, and goes on to tell how they learned to communicate with each other, how Merle became the beloved "mayor" of a small town and well, I don't want to spoil the ending. ;) I enjoyed it so much that I have started the book that Kerasote wrote following this one (Pukka's Promise). I highly recommend Merle's Door and I give it 5 stars!
